Art Center Performing Arts Show and Open House with Special Guest Jim Parker
“It was a fantastic gig, a great night!” said Len Bullard, the front man for the band Dawghous. Len’s group was one of the six acts that were spotlighted at the special Showcase/Open House held at the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Arts Center last Thursday night.
“We had a wonderful turn out for the show, a big appreciative audience who really enjoyed the top-notch entertainment. This was just the first in what we hope will be continuing series of showcases spotlighting the talents of local performing artists. We really want to thank Mark Kelso and the members of the Arts Center for all their help in making this a reality, the wonderful performers who volunteered their time and energy, the Elk Valley Times and the people of Fayetteville and Lincoln County for helping us to get the word out, and everyone who attended the Showcase for all the wonderful support!” said co-host of the event, Taylor Hoch.
Every Thursday night, Ron Hackett and Taylor Hoch host an open mic night in the basement of the Fayetteville-Lincoln County Arts Center from 7-10pm. The Showcase/Open House was a special event held in the big auditorium upstairs in order to give some of the wonderful local performers a chance to play on the stage for a large crowd, and to give the community a chance to enjoy those performances while they also perused lots of outstanding artwork and nibbled Hors d'oeuvres.
Co-host and local singer/songwriter, Taylor Hoch, opened the show with a recitation of the opening soliloquy from Shakespeare’s Richard III, and then she and her sideman, Jay Jernigan, performed five songs from Taylor’s latest album of Americana music.
The next act was a traditional songwriters round where two entertainers are on the stage at the same time and they take turns playing their music. Local singer/songwriter, Zack Huitt, performed three of his Alternative songs, and local singer/songwriter, Marilyn Harris, performed three of her Country songs.
Local singer/songwriter Greg Mitchell, and special guest star for the evening, Jim Parker, were up next and they also did a traditional songwriter’s round. Greg, accompanied by Ron Hackett on guitar, sang some of his Country songs including the cover song for his recently released album. Jim Parker, who hosts a well know songwriters night at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, traded turns with Greg and sang several of his country songs, including his hit song “Chicken Truck”.
“It was really a treat to have Jim Parker participate in our showcase. He runs one of the biggest and most successful songwriter’s showcases in the country!” said Greg Mitchell.
Len Bullard, Curt Zimmerman, and Rick Van Nostrand make up the band Dawghous and they were up next. Len and his crew played a set of original Americana and Country style songs and they had the crowd laughing and clapping along.
Local band, Old Nick and the Gypsies, took the stage next. Kameron Jones, Sarah Weeks, Zack Huitt, and Josh Passon make up the band and they played a set of Americana songs written by their front man, Kameron. Old Nick and the Gypsies were excited to announce that they have just started recording their first album and that it should be out in just a few months.
Co-host Ron Hackett and his jazz trio, A-Drew-Ron-Ron, closed out the show with a set of Jazz favorites. A-Drew-Ron-Ron is named for the members of the trio, Drew Tucker, Ron Adcock, and Ron Hackett.
“Next week, February 5th, we’ll be back to our regular open night down in the basement and we hope that shows like this one will encourage more and more members of the community to come and join in the fun. Since this one was so successful, we’ll also start planning for our next big Showcase night!” said Ron Hackett.
