This class will be taught by Arts Center members Melanie Laten and Martha Brown.

Business owner and artist Melanie Laten retired from teaching in the Birmingham public school system after 26 years of service. In addition to teaching art in public school, she worked part-time doing decorative murals and commission work for commercial businesses and private patrons. Melanie moved to the Tennessee Valley in 2000, where she continues to teach while running a bed and breakfast inn. Her mixed medium program has gained popularity, because she always adds an art history component. Melanie received her BFA and a Master's degree from the University of Montevallo.

Martha Brown started her career in art at 10 years of age when her mother gave her a small paint set. She continued to paint and took watercolor classes at Pensacola Junior College and completed an art course by mail. She taught classes in acrylic and watercolor painting and many other craft mediums, like basket weaving, needlework, macramé, cake decorating, painting on large and small wood cut-out items, ceramics, and tin punch. Martha owned and operated a picture framing and craft supply business for 15 years in southern Mississippi. She designed and painted the Quilt Square design that hangs on the front of the Arts Center building, which makes the Arts Center an official member of the Appalachian Quilt Trail Association.
